Dawson desperate for win over ‘stinging’ Hull KR

St Helens utility back Matty Dawson is taking nothing for granted when his team welcome Hull KR to Langtree Park on Friday evening.

Rovers need to win the game by a large margin to have even a faint chance of making the top eight of Super League.

Saints have nothing meaningful to play for, but Dawson wants a win to boost momentum heading into the next phase of the season.

“We need to win this week and build some momentum going into these Super 8s,” he said.

“It’s no good getting the spot that we’re in and then losing this game this week and going into the Super 8s low on confidence.

“Obviously we want to go in on a high, and keep building from there really.”

Dawson rates Hull KR highly as a side, and will be taking nothing for granted. He also expects something of a backlash from Chris Chester’s men.

“They are a good team, and to miss out on the eight, they’ll be stinging from that,” he said.

“They’ll have a bit of point to prove this week that maybe they should have been in the eight.

“Their consistency’s obviously let them down, but they are a good side. They’re a very good attacking team that can score points from anywhere, as we’ve seen in previous games.

“You probably would have put them in the top eight at the start of the season with the players they’d signed.

“So it’ll be a tough test for us, but hopefully we can get the victory and carry that on into the Super 8s.”
