Danny McGuire compared to cricketer Steve Smith

Hull KR coach Tony Smith has compared his star half-back Danny McGuire to Australian cricketer Steve Smith.

McGuire clinched a 27-26 win for the Robins against Castleford on Sunday with a field-goal.

The 36-year-old – who will retire at the end of the season – kicked a 40/20 before shooting the one-pointer straight from the 20-metre tap.

Speaking after the game, Smith said: “He’s a bit like Steve Smith in that champions shine every now and then.

“Top-class sportsmen step up in those moments when the rest of us struggle in those pressured situations.

“To come up with a 40-20 and then the field goal straight away was smart play.”

Hull KR fans will be hoping McGuire produces more magic on Friday night as they face Wigan at the DW Stadium.
