Currie talks of England selection

Some may look at Ben Currie’s England selection for the World Cup as a bolter but the Warrington ace, restricted to just two appearances in the domestic season, is looking to make up for lost time when the national side heads down under.

Speaking at England’s Media day ahead of the tournament he first spoke about his selection.

“It was always a goal but then once I got the slight knock again after my second game back it was always a worry.” He said, “Wayne Bennett and the staff have shown great faith in me, kept me in the squad throughout the year. Hopefully I can repay them when I get out there.”

Asked to recall where he was when the call came through about heading to the World Cup Currie said, “I was away on the beach when I got the call. I was over the moon. I didn’t know what to expect. It ended up being good news!

“I thought it would be hard to make the squad but they have shown great faith.

“There’s a good mix of lads and I know everyone having either played with or against them. Everyone is positive. We know we’ve got a really good chance at this and we are all eager to get started.”

Currie also gave a brief insight of what he and the England squad can expect with the flight and immediate aftermath.

“We fly out on Thursday, will have a bit of recovery and I’m sure Wayne will have plans to get us out on the field, training with each other.”
