Cunningham untroubled by St Helens defence

St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham believes that his team’s defensive structures remain sound, despite conceding 38 points at Castleford last week.

Saints actually won the game 42-38, and Cunningham insists that his team will be doing very little different when they welcome fierce rivals Wigan to Langtree Park this Friday evening.

“I’m quite happy with where we’re at,” he said.

“We always work hard defensively anyway, we don’t change anything that we do.

“We had a great defensive performance against Leeds the week before, and we didn’t change anything for the week after.

“We’ve watched the video, and we’ve tried to improve whatever we can.

“We’ve educated the players as much as we can in certain areas, and we do it every day on the training field.

“So nothing’s going to change the way we defend. We’re always going to defend the same.

“Nothing will change the way we attack. We’ll always attack the same.

“I thought we were very good with ball in hand.

“Our structure was quite solid, it was just certain one-on-one misses.”

Cunningham would love to reward the St Helens fans for their support in 2015 with a fine derby win on Friday night.

“The fans deserve it, the fans have been phenomenal all year for us,” he said.

“They’ve stuck with us through thick and thin, and they’ve travelled away to venues and supported us in numbers.

“The real, true diehard Saints supporters deserve as much success as they can possibly get.”
