Cunningham lauds Saints defence

St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham admitted his players put in a brilliant defensive display which saw them pick up a vital 23-4 victory against Wigan.

Saints must now wait and see what the result is when Catalans Dragons travel to Widnes Vikings before celebrating a top four spot.

“100%. I think if you look at our previous record over the last four weeks. Since that Wakefield game where we had to defend our way to victory and then you go to Widnes and put in a great defensive performance,” Cunningham told Sky Sports.

“Last week was another great defensive performance.

“I am proud of my players. We set ourselves a bit of a goal a few weeks ago to have a real crack at it.

“Victories build belief in the players and when you believe in each other you can do anything.

“You see the great sides in history. They have got that self-belief between the group that is unbreakable and that’s where we’re heading. They deserve everything they get.

“They work exceptionally hard and to come to this place and play against a really good Wigan side and keep it to one try is no mean feat.

“We will get a nice little break now. We can watch them boys next week and roll on again.”
