Coventry Bears have confirmed the signing of Michael Russell from the Irish domestic league.

The utility half was born in Sydney, before moving to Dublin when he was 12.

He has played for the Barnhall Butchers in Ireland, and has represented the Wolfhounds at under 19, ‘A’ team and senior level.

“I’m really pleased to be able to confirm Mikey has joined the squad for 2017,” said Bears coach Tom Tsang.

“He has been on our radar for a while now having been a standout in the Irish domestic representative side for a number of years and was part of the Irish World Cup qualifying campaign this Autumn.

“He is a utility player who is equally at home in the hooker, halfback and fullback positions, with great ball skills, acceleration and a strong work ethic.

“Having met with Mikey and discussed the season with him, I am positive he will fit straight into the squad and I hope he can play a big role in our success in 2017.”
