Coventry have signed Scotland World Cup hopefuls Niall Sidney and Jed Charlton from Newcastle Thunder.

Winger or full-back Sidney, 22, came through the City of Hull academy before joining Thunder. He is a Scotland international and will be hoping to represent the Bravehearts at next year’s World Cup.

Coventry coach Richard Squires said: “Niall is another product of the Newcastle Thunder who has also spent time with the City of Hull academy.

“Scoring 14 tries in eight games on his debut League 1 season, he has the natural ability to score points. With bags of natural talent, he is very coachable and willing to learn.”

Back-rower Charlton, 21, was invited to train with the Scotland national team last year and will be hoping a good year with the Bears can see him play for Scotland in the 2021 World Cup.

Squires added: “Jed comes from a great development system and has worked had to get to where he is today.

“A versatile and quick back-rower with bags of experience for his age will make an impact this year in League 1 with consistent game time.

“Having been invited to train with Scotland last year, he will be wanting a big year to push towards the World Cup squad.”
