Clough set for Scorpions bow

South Wales Scorpions could hand a debut to former York and Rochdale back-row forward Chris Clough in Sunday’s Co-operative Championship One fixture against Oldham.

Clough watched South Wales‘ recent match with Keighley and is now set to be included for the Roughyeds’ visit to Caerphilly.

Oldham coach Tony Benson will have Jason Boults available after he avoided suspension at the RFL’s disciplinary hearing on Wednesday night.

Neil Roden, Martin Roden and Marcus St Hilaire will all return to action, while Paul Noone (eye) will be monitored before any final decision is made on his fitness.

However, John Gillam will not feature. Benson said: “John injured his foot against Hull, and we originally feared he’d broken it. The good news is that he’s just strained it, which means he’ll be out for about three weeks – that’s a lot better than if he had suffered a break.”

Winger Lucas Onyango (ruptured Achilles) is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, although Benson insisted Oldham’s massive injury problems are now “starting to clear up”.

On South Wales, Benson said: “They’re on a rapid improve, and they’re putting some good points on people.

“They can certainly attack, and they’re probably the biggest improvers in our competition. We know we’ve got a big game, especially after travelling down there, but we’re ready for it and we’re looking forward to it.”
