Championship round-up: Widnes remain top of table, Barrow stun Newcastle & first Dewsbury victory

The latest round-up from the Championship as three sides remain unbeaten in the competition.

Matty Smith ensured Widnes remained at the top of the table with a drop-goal kick to win the game at Halifax.

In a tense battle at the Shay, the former Super League half-back slotted the one point on 67 minutes to secure a 9-8 victory.

Widnes forward Eribe Doro, on loan from Warrington, opened the scoring. Joe Edge converted the try and kicked a penalty goal for an 8-0 lead at the break.

James Saltonstall hit back for the hosts early in the second half, but Smith’s composure helped his side to an unbeaten start for the Vikings.

Elsewhere in the Championship

Barrow also made in three wins on the bounce in 2022 with a 14-6 victory at home over full-time Newcastle.

Tries from Bradd Crellin and Tee Ritson saw Paul Crarey’s side maintain their unbeaten run in their return to the Championship. Former Super League winger Ryan Shaw with their kicking duties.

Gideon Boafo scored Newcastle’s only try of the game. Thunder have won just once in their opening three fixtures.

Forward Mitch Clark saw a red in the second half for Newcastle for a high tackle. They were further punished and down to 11 when Josh Eaves was sent for 10 minutes later in the second 40.

Championship favourites Featherstone also continue their 100% record. They claimed a 26-10 victory over Workington away from home. Bailey Gill left the field early on his Featherstone debut with injury.

York City Knights defeat Batley

Huddersfield loanee Ronan Michael scored his first try for York in their trip to Batley. Will Oakes also scoring to help his side to a 10-4 victory at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium.

Dewsbury claimed their first victory of the 2022 campaign with a a 12-10 score over Sheffield at home.

London Broncos remain without a win as they fell to an 8-0 home defeat to Whitehaven.
