Some of the top teams in the Championship could compete consistently in a Super League environment, according to Barrow player Nathan Mossop.

The hooker helped Barrow gain promotion to the Championship last season after an impressive campaign in League 1.

Mossop, who has started his 12-month testimonial year, is relishing playing in the Championship this season and is up for the challenge.

He said: “First and foremost, my number one goal is to support the team.

“We’ve set ourselves some goals in terms of what we want to achieve this year, and the whole club are under no illusions that it’s going to be a very, very tough challenge.

“If you look at some of the teams in the Championship now, they’ve recruited very well.

“Some of the top teams could probably compete consistently in a Super League environment, so it’s going to be a challenging year. Personally, it gives me a good incentive to make it a successful year, on and off the field.”

Barrow made a fine start to life back in the Championship. They beat Sheffield 22-10 in the opening round of the season last weekend.

He said: “If you would’ve offered me that result before kick-off, I’d have ripped your hand off! Sheffield have been a consistent team in the Championship over a number of years, with a strong squad.

“I think that, collectively, the lads stuck in, stuck to our processes and got the win.

“There were terrible conditions on Sunday, but it was pleasing to see the lads stick to the game plan and do what’s been asked for us.

“We couldn’t have started the season better, and we’ve just got to build that momentum this weekend against Whitehaven.”

Next up Barrow is a Cumbrian derby against rivals Whitehaven on Sunday afternoon.
