Chambers: ‘In-form Swinton would have been a danger to anyone’

Gary Chambers thinks Swinton would have given any side in the Championship a run for their money, if they had managed to make the play-offs.

The Lions spent most of the season battling to avoid relegation but finished the season in 10th place after finally coming together as a team.

Swinton took 14 points from a possible 18 in their last six games – ending up just five points off a play-off place.

If they had managed to turn things round a few weeks earlier they would undoubtedly have made the top eight.

“It shows how we have come on as a group over the last six weeks,” said coach Chambers, who brought in seven new players since taking over from Steve McCormack.

“In the changing rooms after the Workington game I could see there was a change in them.

“We lost that game but the attitude was ‘we should be winning these games’ and they weren’t happy.

“They got mad and it was massive turning point, and realisation of what we had learnt over the months.

“They realised what they were doing in practise worked and they had to start putting it into action.

“If we had sneaked a play-off position I don’t think anyone would have fancied playing us.

“I’m not saying for one minute that we are good enough to win it. We are still young and naive in some areas.

“But we are capable of beating any team and they would have been looking over their shoulders at us to find out what we are doing.”
