Challenge Cup round-up: Royal Navy run comes to an end, York defeat Newcastle & history made

Royal Navy Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup dream came to an end for the Royal Navy as they fell to a 66-6 defeat to Batley in the fourth round.

The Royal Navy opened their 2022 cup campaign with a huge 60-0 victory over Bridgend Blue Bulls. Along the way, they also defeated the British Army and York Acorn in their magnificent cup run.

However, Championship outfit Batley were too strong for the side in the fourth round.

History

North Wales Crusaders secured their spot in the fifth round on Saturday following a 30-8 victory over League 1 rivals Hunslet.

It’s the club’s first time in the fifth round since 2015.

History was made as the clash was played at Paton Field, home of Caldy RFC – the first professional game of rugby league held on the Wirral since 1904.

Elsewhere

Whitehaven put 60 points on League 1 side Doncaster for a 60-0 score. The Championship side crossed for 48 points in the second half.

Workington Town defeated Dewsbury Rams 26-12.

Barrow remain undefeated in 2022. With three wins in the Championship, Paul Crarey’s side defeated Rochdale 38-12 at the Crown Oil Arena.

Live on the Sportsman, York City Knights defeated Newcastle Thunder 42-13. It was a strong display from James Fords’ side at the LNER Community Stadium, with Matty Marsh claiming the man of the match award. Jamie Ellis with 100% conversion rate.

Like Barrow, Featherstone remain undefeated in 2022 following their 29-16 victory over Halifax at the Shay. Joey Leilua returned to the side, named in the centres.

London Broncos fell to a 34-8 defeat at home to Bradford. Elliot Hall made his debut for the Bulls.

National Conference League side Hunslet Club Parkside will hold their heads high as they came to a 40-20 defeat to Sheffield. It was just 22-20 to the Eagles with minutes remaining before they ran in three more tries.

Leigh host Widnes live on Premier Sports on Monday night.

Fifth round draw

Premier Sports will host the fifth round draw of the Challenge Cup following Leigh’s home game with Widnes on Monday, February 28.

The draw will be shown live following Monday night’s coverage.

It will be conducted by Emma Louise Jones, Kyle Amor and Kevin Brown. The trio will be part of Premier Sports’ coverage at the Leigh Sports Village.

The fifth round will be made up of five ties, with Super League clubs joining in round six.
