Challenge Cup has extra significance for Sinfield

Leeds skipper Kevin Sinfield has admitted that the Challenge Cup has been absent from his club’s trophy cabinet for too long.

The Rhinos face Warrington Wolves in the Cup semi-final on August 9, and Sinfield is keen to reach Wembley.

“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t [hold particular significance] – it is something I’d love to win,” he said, according to the RFL official website.

“It is an important trophy and the club have not won it since 1999 – it has been too long for a club as good as ours.”

Sinfield has been the focus of some controversy recently, with his headbutt on Castleford’s Luke Dorn earning him a two-game ban.

The player has put the incident behind him now, and is focusing on making sure the rest of the season is successful.

“People can say what they want,” he added.

“It is pointless me offering any reasons or comments on it – everyone else has made their minds up so I won’t try to change anybody’s. I understand it is part and parcel of the job and environment I’m in.

“I’m just looking forward to getting back playing, as I’m sure everyone else has been who has faced a ban or been injured.”
