Israel Folau made 15 appearances for Catalans last season

Catalans have confirmed they have released Israel Folau from the remainder of his contract with immediate effect.

The dual-code Australia international linked up with the Dragons in 2020, making 15 appearances, and signed a one-year contract extension for 2021 but told the club earlier this year that he wanted to stay in Australia for family reasons.

Catalans have now released Folau, who will now be able to play for Queensland-based club Southport Tigers.

Dragons chairman Bernard Guasch said: “Israel has been great with us in 2020 both on and off the field and we wanted to facilitate the negotiations to reach an agreement.

“He told us his desire to play alongside his two brothers and we didn’t want to prevent him. We wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career.”
