Harlequins opened up the Millennium Magic weekend with a gripping win over Catalans Dragons in a high scoring encounter.

The lead changed hand on a number of occasions during the match before Chad Randall's 74th minute try nudged Quins in front for the final time, and it proved too much for the Dragons to claw back.

Harlequins started the better side and were 12-0 up within 10 minutes – Andy Smith and Jon Wells both crossing for converted tries.

But Catalans, buoyed by the 400-strong travelling support from Perpignan, hit back, and two tries in three minutes from Clint Greenshields and Stacey Jones saw them back on level terms.

Randall's first try came on the half hour mark to edge Quins back in front, 18-12, but Catalans looked like they might run away with things with three quick tries at the start of the second half – John Wilson (49), Jones (55) and Andrew Bentley (60) stretching the advantage to 28-18.

Unfortunately for the Dragons it wasnt enough. Paul Sykes' try hauled Quins back in it, before Randall's converted try saw Quins hit the front once again. And Sykes landed a penalty on the hooter to see Quins home 32-28.
