Castleford take league leaders shield to the wire
Castleford ensured top spot in Super League will be decided on the final weekend of the season with a 26-22 win over Wakefield.
Following St Helens defeat against Warrington on Thursday night, the Tigers knew a win against their local rivals would keep them in the hunt for what would be a remarkable league leaders’ shield triumph.
They led 22-10 at the break, in front of a 9132-strong crowd, but needed a late Jake Webster try to confirm victory against the gutsy Wildcats, who saw their unlikely play-off dreams ended by Widnes’ win at Bradford.
The two points puts Castleford within two of St Helens at the top, but with a superior points difference.
Saints can seal top spot if they beat Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday, but if they lose, Castleford will be able to leapfrog them to the trophy by beating Catalan in Perpignan on Saturday.
The team finishing 1st in the regular season has not gone on to win the Grand Final at Old Trafford since Wigan in 2010.
