Batley prop Byron Smith has returned to the Wales squad for this weekend’s game against Ireland in Wrexham.

The former Halifax and Castleford front rower last played for Wales in 2007, and he is looking forward to getting back into action in a red shirt.

“It’s good to be back, I’m enjoying it, the boys seem close and it’s a good team spirit,” he said.

“There’s no cliques and all seems good.”

Smith couldn’t take part in the two defeats to Scotland and France due to personal circumstances.

“Work commitments kept me out for the first couple of weeks,” the 30-year-old explained.

“My wife and I went on holiday after our league season finished as we couldn’t do that at any other point then I would have liked to have come into camp straight away, but the senior position I have in my work meant that I was unable to.

“However I have been able to get this week off and I hope to be playing on Sunday.

“Hopefully I’ll be playing for Wales for a few more years. I’ve a few more years yet in my career.”
