Burgess thinks Wigan ties could create hostile reception

Joe Burgess believes his Wigan connections may make a hostile reception when Sydney Roosters take on St Helens this weekend.

The 21 year-old is a new signing with Trent Robinson’s side after plying his trade with Wigan Warriors for the last two seasons, scoring 52 tries in 55 games.

Burgess has played at Langtree Park before with the Warriors in the local derby with St Helens, and scored a try before throwing the ball into the crowd in celebration.

The England international was cautioned for his actions, and this has made Burgess expect a frosty reception from the supporters of his old club’s biggest rivals.

“I ran the length of the field, scored, and threw the ball into the crowd,” Burgess told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“By the end of the game, we were down, and I got quite a bit of stick. ‘Burgess, Burgess, what’s the score?’ I was getting it for all of the game.

“I threw the ball and the ref said ‘don’t get ’em started’. I might get a better reception this week because I’m in Roosters colours – but I might not!”
