Briscoe hoping for Widnes return

Widnes full-back Shaun Briscoe is hoping to be included in the team to face St Helens at the Stobart Stadium on Sunday.

Briscoe, 29, underwent surgery in the off-season and although he was named in the 19-man squad, sat out the Vikings’ opening day win over London Broncos last weekend.

The former Wigan, Hull and Hull KR man was restricted to just eight appearances in an injury-hit first season with Widnes last season.

He told the club’s official website: “Last year was the worst of my career by far for injuries and although I only had two, they were serious ones. In my desperation to play I probably came back too soon on both occasions and made them worse.

“As disappointed as I was to miss out on selection for the game (last Sunday), I know it’s going to be a long season and I know I can play a big role after last year’s disappointment.

“Saints will be smarting after the game at weekend so we need a big performance to get the points. I’m hoping to be part of it and be back on the field with the lads.”

Last season was the first time Briscoe had failed to make more than 20 appearances in a Super League season since 2003.

He has scored 101 tries in more than 235 appearances as a top-flight player.
