Brisbane open to WCS challenge

Brisbane Broncos are open to the prospect of taking part in this year’s World Club Series, according to sources in Australia.

Brisbane have previously been linked with hosting a Super League club ahead of the 2017 season.

Club chairman Dennis Watt is open to the idea of that fixture being part of the World Club Series.

“That’s still a project for us, but if the (RFL) want us to play in their match, we wouldn’t want to see the WSC concept be diminished,” Watt told the Brisbane Courier-Mail.

Melbourne Storm, along with a clutch of other NRL clubs, have blanked the chance to play in the World Club Series, as they feel it would disrupt their preseason preparations too much.

But the Broncos, who are coached by England head coach Wayne Bennett, feel more positive about making a trip.

Bennett recently told British reporters that he felt that Melbourne and the other reluctant NRL clubs “have all got their reasons” for not wanting to participate.

But he also asserted that the trip his club made earlier this year did not disrupt his team’s preseason preparations and subsequent NRL performance.
