Brian Smith predicts deadline day dealing is here to stay

Wakefield coach Brian Smith thinks that some kind of transfer deadline day is inevitably in British rugby league, now that the Super 8s are a feature of the season.

Trinity have been one of a number of clubs who have recruited new faces for the business end of the season, with deals from some clubs being completed right up to the last minutes of the RFL’s deadline.

Smith compares the situation to football, where the transfer deadline day frenzy has become a fixed part of the sport’s calendar.

“I think it’s just the nature of it, it’s almost like the deadline in soccer now,” Smith told The News Hub.

“I think every year at this time now is going to be like this where teams are trying to fill up whatever they can, any spots that may be weak or need strengthening.

“Everybody’s going to do this every year I think.”
