Brett Robinson chooses Roughyeds

Oldham have beaten off competition from Championship clubs to secure the services of half-back Brett Robinson for 2014.

Robinson, 23, was offered a new deal at his previous club – Oxford – whilst there were also several other interested parties.

However, the playmaker chose the Roughyeds, and head coach Scott Naylor is delighted to have signed the Wigan academy graduate.

“When players who have been offered Championship rugby still want to come to Oldham it shows that people in the game are saying the right things about us,” said Naylor.

“He’s a player I’ve always liked and he will fit into the way we are attempting to progress the Roughyeds team and the Oldham club.

“He’s the perfect signing for us. He will make a huge difference to the strength of the squad, adding qualities that will hopefully allow us to build on what we achieved last season.

“When he was coming through the ranks at Wigan as a teenager everyone was talking about him, but he picked up a couple of early injuries that set him back a bit and then he went off to Australia for a couple of years and that took him off the radar of clubs over here.”

Robinson, who has also had spells with Widnes and Rochdale in his career, played in two Grand Finals for Perth based club North Beach during his time in Western Australia.
