Boyd: Wigan a perfect start

Brisbane fullback Darius Boyd says the World Club Series match against Wigan is the perfect way for the Broncos to kick start their 2016 NRL season.

Brisbane are looking to repeat their display in 2015 and return to the grand final.

Last year the Broncos defeated Wigan and started the NRL campaign strongly, reaching the decider where they were beaten by North Queensland by just a point.

Boyd said that golden point loss to the Cowboys has been put to bed.

“Yeah we had a video session and looked at the improvements we need to put in our game,” he told Love Rugby League.

“We have to play better this year even if what to get even close that level. It starts this Saturday, it’s a great test over. Wigan are a tough team and it will be in tough conditions.

“It’s a good stepping stone for round one ahead.”

Boyd missed the 2015 World Club Series win over Wigan as he recovered from injury.

“I’ve played Wigan at the DW before in 2011, that was a great occasion then and the boys said last year was one too,” he said.

“So I’m expecting a similar occasion. Last year it would have been harder as we were playing with a new coach and a couple of new players.

“But this year, we’ve only got one or two new players so it’s a pretty similar squad so it should make it a bit easier for us this year. I’m sure we can put on a good performance.”

Boyd is expecting different conditions to those that the Broncos are used to in Queensland.

“I watched the Catalans game in round one and it looked pretty sloshy and muddy,” he said.

“I heard they re-turfed the ground so that could be a bit better for us. Obviously the conditions make it tough, especially when we’re not used to the conditions.

“But Wigan have started the season well and it’s our first hitout so it should be a good game.
