Darius Boyd is set to follow coach Wayne Bennett to his third consecutive NRL club, after signing with Newcastle.

Boyd, 23, has been coached by Bennett at Brisbane and St George and will join up with the former Australian test coach at the Knights on a four-year deal starting next year.

After Timana Tahu and Kade Snowden, Boyd is the latest high-profile player to sign with the club, which was bought in May by mining Tycoon Nathan Tinkler in March for a reputed $100million.

Hunter Sports Group CEO Troy Palmer is confident the signing of Boyd will give the entire club as well as members and fans a great lift.

He said: “The signing of a current international and premiership winning player clearly highlights the enthusiasm of NRL players wanting to join the club and be part of our exciting future.

“It is very important that we don’t get in front of ourselves and continue to concentrate on our current job of a top 8 semi-final position this year.

“The job that Rick Stone and the playing group have been doing each week has given fans the feeling that even better things are to come this year and that they are continuing to lay down a great platform for the future.”
