Boyd impressed by ‘gutsy’ Knights

Newcastle full back Darius Boyd says the performance of the Knights in adversity against Cronulla at the weekend was “gutsy”.

Despite the loss of skipper Kurt Gidley and inspirational forward Neville Costigan, the Knights showed plenty of determination to record an 18-6 victory.

“It was a pretty gutsy win, you saw when Kurt came off and Nev couldn’t come back too, I think we gutsed it out pretty well,” said Boyd

“We’ve definitely got things to work on but it was good to get the first win.”

The Knights have a win and a loss so far this year and Boyd is insistent there is plenty of improvement left in the squad.

“It’s a long process and there are a lot of things we’ve got to take in and get right,” Boyd said.

“It’s only two games in but I think we improved a lot of things on the weekend already and there are still a lot more things we can improve on as well.”

Gidley has been ruled out for up to four weeks with a dislocated shoulder and Boyd says he will be missed.

“Gids is the captain and an Australian test player so he’s obviously going to be missed but I’m sure whoever comes in this week will do a fine job,” he added.
