Utility back Deon Bird has decided to return to Australia at the end of the season.

Bird has played the last 2 seasons with Castleford Tigers, having previously player for Gateshead, Hull, Wakefield and Widnes in Superleague.

The 30-year old played the first year of Superleague with Paris St Germain in 1996.

"I was offered a deal for next season but I felt that the time was right for me to return home," he said.

"My plans now are to settle down with my family and possibly play some rugby in the Queensland Cup competition."

Tigers coach Terry Matterson paid tribute to Bird's versatility and willingness to put his body on the line.

"Deon has gone past the call of duty this season," said Matterson.

"He has been pretty busted at times but he has played in almost every position for us except the front row. He epitomises what a good clubman is all about."
