Betts proud of Widnes’ spirit
Widnes coach Denis Betts says there is a growing resilience in his team after they fought back to defeat Leeds at Headingley for the first time in four years.
Widnes had not beat the Rhinos on their home turf since 2012.
The Vikings won a tight one yesterday thanks to Joe Mellor‘s 78th minute drop goal.
“It’s an understatement to say I’m proud of this team.
“There’s a resilience building in this team, we could so easily have folded on the back of the massive disappointment in the Challenge Cup.
“Moving on to this week knowing that Leeds are very desperate. They had to win every single game, are at home and have some players back. For us to win this game is very impressive.
“It’s a fantastic achievement to all but secure our place in the top eight.”
Widnes spanked Leeds at the Select Security Stadium earlier this season.
“We’re a good team, we’ve worked really hard,” Betts said.
“It’s been a fair few years since we’ve won here.
To do the double over Leeds is a massive achievement for us.”
