Betts pleased with ruthless Widnes after club record victory

Widnes coach Denis Betts was pleased with his ruthless side and said they paid opponents Coventry the utmost respect in their Challenge Cup encounter.

The Vikings ran in 17 unanswered tries to record a club record victory, 90-0, and end a run of four straight defeats.

Betts said: “It’s nice we get a nil on the board, it’s nice we’ve scored a lot of points. We wanted to be ruthless.

“We wanted to put things in place that’s been lacking. We didn’t want to feel sorry for anybody, we didn’t want to just throw the ball around and randomly offload, we wanted to build pressure, kick the ball well, defend our line. It was all about how we performed today.

“They tried hard and they never gave in. You saw them warm up and in the changing room before the game, they came to play and that’s why we had to be ruthless.

“We paid them respect by being as good as we could be.

“There’ll be a little bit more asked of us come Friday night (against Wigan), but you can only play what’s in front of you.

“We know we’ve got to start winning some games in Super League, it’s our home game and we want to put in a performance that we can be proud of.”
