Betts happy with Widnes progress

Widnes coach Denis Betts was “pretty happy” after seeing his Vikings side defeat Swinton 28-6 at Leigh Sports Village.

The Vikings were always in control of the match, and led 10-0 at the break thanks to tries from Stefan Marsh and Paddy Flynn.

A plucky Lions display restricted their Super League opponents for much of the second half and managed a try of their own through Sam Reay after Danny Craven had stretched Widnes’ lead.

Late tries from Rhys Hanbury and Kurt Haggerty added gloss to the scoreline for Widnes, who handed out debuts to Hanbury, Shaun Briscoe and Jon Clarke.

Betts told the club’s official website: “I’m pretty happy with the score line, the 6 points was what we gave them.

“Mullally, Hep Cahill and Danny Craven have stepped forward again. Briscoe and Clarke gave us a lot. We have got to keep staying positive, it’s going to be a difficult year for us but we will get there. It’s coming together and the focus is a lot stronger.”
