Bennett expecting tough Warriors test

St George coach Wayne Bennett admits that beating Wigan on their own turf in the World Club Challenge on Sunday will be a tough assignment.

Bennett has named a strong line-up to face the Warriors for the clash on Sunday evening, but is mindful of the size of the task ahead.

“Wigan’s a tough place to win at,” said Bennett. “We’re going over there to give ourselves the best chance we can.

“There isn’t a great deal of difference between the two competitions and it comes down to the quality of players and that’s something Wigan have plenty of. They’ve a few injuries and suspensions at the minute which might weaken them and that could be key for us.”

Bennett led the club to their first ever NRL premiership last year, and his side look to be equally as strong for next season’s campaign following a hammering of South Sydney in the charity shield.

“Pre-season has gone well for us,” he said.

“There’s a lot of young players and some older ones in the squad but we’ve pulled everyone together and there’s a real commitment which was shown in the victory against South Sydney. We played well and we’re where we want to be.

“We’ve got all our players available for the World Club Challenge so that’s great. It will be a whole different atmosphere compared to Australia, it will be cold and wet and we’re playing against opposition who don’t have to travel half way around the world.”
