Barrow retain services of Scottish international

Barrow Raiders have announced forward Sam Brooks has signed a new deal, keeping him at the club for the 2023 season.

The 28-year-old joined the Raiders ahead of the 2022 season from Swinton Lions, who were relegated from the Championship in 2021.

Since making the move to Cumbria, Brooks has made 21 appearances for the Raiders. He has played a key role in their Championship campaign, which currently has them fifth with four games to go.

Brooks has also featured for Leigh, Featherstone, Whitehaven, Widnes and Halifax over a varied career. He is also a graduate of the Wigan academy.

He has also made five appearances for Scotland, the last of which came at the 2017 World Cup, in a 74-6 defeat to New Zealand.

Brooks told the club website: “One thing every player wants is to get their contract sorted early.

“Personally, I’ve had a good season so far, and the club as a whole definitely has.  We’ve all achieved great things so far, so it was quite an easy decision to put pen to paper and re-sign for next season.

“I think it took me some time to adjust to travelling at the start of the season, but now I’m really enjoying it. I play every week when I’m up for selection, and with what we’ve done this year, it’s hard not to enjoy it. We’ve surprised a lot of people.”

Barrow play-off spot secured & other Championship results

Barrow secured their spot in the play-offs at fifth spot over the weekend following a 30-12 victory away at Batley.

Leigh currently sit at the top of the table, having only lost one game all season. Adrian Lam’s side have claimed 44 points so far, five in front of promotion-chasing rivals Featherstone Rovers.

Halifax and the Bulldogs make up the rest of the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Workington Town’s relegation was confirmed following their 38-12 defeat away at London Broncos. Chris Thorman’s side have won just one match from 23 in their return to the Championship. They will feature in the League 1 once again in 2023.

Dewsbury Rams are also flirting with relegation with just two wins and a draw so far this season. Their remaining games include Workington, Batley, Barrow and Sheffield.

Whitehaven sit above in 12th spot with 11 points and remain the only team Dewsbury could overtake in the table.

London Broncos, who struggled at the start of the season, confirmed their Championship status with the 38-12 victory over the capital’s side. They sit 10th in the table with 15 points.
