Barron confident of opening win

Wales international Matt Barron sees no reason why Gateshead can’t open their season with a win over Doncaster on Sunday.

Barron has returned to the north east from York this close season, and he is confident of a positive start to Thunder’s Northern Rail Cup campaign.

He told the club’s official website: “Training has really stepped up and everyone has been focused.

“We’ve all really had a good dig since October and we really want to go out on Sunday and have a real good go at Doncaster, there is no reason why we can’t get a win.”

After opening their account against Doncaster at the Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday, Thunder face away trips to Whitehaven and York City Knights.

Their final Northern Rail Cup group game is at home against last year’s winners Leigh on March 4th.
