Former Leeds Rhinos prop and Sky Sports pundit Barrie McDermott has urged all rugby league fans to back Kevin Sinfield‘s nomination as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

McDermott believes that the nomination gives rugby league some of the wider recognition that the sport deserves.

“I’m thrilled for Kevin and I’m thrilled for Leeds Rhinos as a club,” he told Rhinos TV.

“But I’m thrilled for the sport, because it gives us recognition.

“He’s the first rugby league player to be recognised in such a way.

“I’d love to see the game really get behind him.

“I know that the Rhinos fans will back him, I know that the city of Leeds will get behind him.

“But I’d love to see the rugby league fans in general consider it as a recognition of the game, and let’s get Kevin as far up the list as we can.”
