Back-rower Matty Ashurst has signed a new four year-deal with Wakefield Trinity.

The 28-year-old will stay at the club until the end of the 2021 campaign.

He arrived at Belle Vue ahead of the 2015 season from Salford Red Devils and has a lot of experience, racking up 75 appearances for the Red Devils while playing 60 games for St Helens earlier on in his career.

Ashurst has become a fan favourite at Trinity because of his stellar displays, with him scoring 24 tries in 66 games for the club. He also picked up the Players’ Player of the Year award at the annual end of season dinner.

And he is made up to have secured a long-term stay at Wakefield.

Ashurst said: “I am really happy to have secured my long-term future here at Wakefield.

“The club has improved massively in the time that I’ve been here and that showed with us narrowly missing out on the semis last season.

“I have enjoyed working under Chezzy (Chris Chester) and the rest of the staff and we’ve got a really good group of lads here which was a big reason why I wanted to stay.

“I’m looking forward to the future and hopefully playing a part in the club building on the last couple of years and continuing the move in the right direction.”
