Amateur player releases rugby league novel

Blackpool Stanley North West Division player Chris Davies has published a novel which follows the story of a young grassroots player and his battle with depression.

The novel, titled The Rules of Engagement, is based in St Helens and is currently available on Amazon in print and as an ebook.

Davies, a lifelong Saints fan, said: “I write a lot about mental health and most of my novels are around that.

“This came about back when I was at university the other year, my lecturer said to me that I talk a lot about rugby, have I ever written about it and I hadn’t, so he asked why not and I had never really thought about it and I developed the idea from there.

“What I really wanted to do was create something different from the usual mental health things you see.

“Even though the book is about rugby league and depression, I think the main theme of the book is friendship and male comrade.

“At the end of the day, it’s okay to feel not okay.”
