St Helens coach Paul Wellens has revealed they will be without prop Alex Walmsley for up to four weeks due to a hamstring injury.

The England international left the field after just one carry in their 38-0 win over Wakefield on Friday night.

Walmsley limped off the field with a hamstring injury, so he has been ruled out of this week’s Good Friday derby with rivals Wigan.

Wellens said: “It’s a hamstring so he’s probably going to miss four weeks I’d say, so it’s unlikely he will play until after the international break.

“Its really unfortunate, particularly in the case of Jai Field as well. I think what these fixtures deserve is the best versus the best, so it’s a huge occasion and it would be even better having both of those guys on the field being the big players that they are.

“I don’t think it will detract from it too much because there’s still a lot of quality out there, but it is still disappointing for both of those guys that they are not able to play because they add a great deal to both teams.”

Duo could soften Alex Walmsley blow

Whilst losing Walmsley is a blow, Wellens revealed Saints could welcome back Agnatius Paasi and Jake Wingfield to their pack for Good Friday.

Wellens added: “They are potentially both going to play but what both of those guys need to do is get through a training session tomorrow.

“They’ve been on the field today doing a bit of running and getting moving again.

“It’s an area at the moment where our middles have been a bit depleted, particularly now losing Alex and Dan Norman, who injured himself at Swinton.

“We are a little bit down on numbers at the moment in the middle unit, but we’re confident if those guys come through tomorrow’s session well enough then they’ll put themselves in the position to play.”
