Former Press Secretary to former Prime Minister Tony Blair, now author and strategist, Alastair Campbell has lent his support to the newly formed campaigning & fundraising group ‘In League with Labour’ which uses the sport of rugby league as theme, and which is launched in Huddersfield next week.

The group will hold a series of events throughout the year and several high profile personalities from sport and politics are expected to lend their support to the launch event, the ‘Founders Lunch’ at the George Hotel on October 22nd , including Alastair Campbell.

Rugby league has a long association with the Labour movement, with many prominent Labour politicians being rugby league fans and many rugby league fans, players & administrators being Labour supporters.

“In League with Labour is a very exciting venture and is a great way for the Labour party to listen to the Rugby League community about issues that affect them and to raise vital funds for the Labour party.” Said Mr Campbell.

“I’m aware of the historic significance of The George Hotel and its place in Rugby League history. The Founders Lunch on October 22nd is an appropriate place to launch In League with Labour and the event is certain to be a success. I’m disappointed to be missing it, but I look forward to my involvement in the future.” He said.

Stefan Hopewell, Secretary of in League with Labour said: “The sport of rugby league and the Labour movement have a long history of collaboration which exists to this day. We welcome Alastair’s endorsement and we look forward to him being able to attend our events in the future.”
