St Helens have confirmed that young hooker Aaron Smith has been cleared of any serious injuries after suffering whiplash during Friday’s win over Warrington.

The 22-year-old picked up the knock attempting to tackle Sitaleki Akauola in the early stages of their meeting at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Smith, who signed a new long-term deal at the club in May and has been tipped to be the successor to James Roby, received on-pitch medical attention for several minutes before departing the field on a stretcher.

He was discharged from hospital over the weekend with scans revealing no fracture, nerve damage or serious injury.

Despite the early setback, Justin Holbrook’s side produced a gritty performance to edge the Wolves 21-10 and move eight points clear at the summit of the Betfred Super League table.

A statement on the club’s official website confirmed that, should Smith continue to make steady progress, he could be available for selection for Friday’s trip to Hull FC.
