1895 Cup round-up: Thorman dream start, Marginet inspires Newcastle, Halliday scores five

The first round of the inaugural 1895 Cup competition didn’t disappoint…

It was a perfect start to life for Chris Thorman as Workington Town coach. Town, who only had 14 players available, edged past Hunslet 31-28 in a thriller at the South Leeds Stadium.

Oliver Wilkes bagged a hat-trick for Workington, with Dec O’Donnell and Scott Rooke also going over for the Cumbrian club.

Oldham eased past League One rivals Whitehaven 48-12 at the Vestacare Stadium on Sunday.

Danny Langtree, Ritchie Hawkyard, Matty Wilkinson (2), Kyran Johnson, Jack Holmes (2) and Paul Crook crossed the whitewash for the Roughyeds.

France international Remy Marginet put in a classy displays to inspire Newcastle Thunder to a 38-12 victory over Keighley Cougars at Kingston Park.

Marginet, Mo Agoro (2), Alex Clegg (2) and Kieran Gill (2) scored for Simon Finnigan’s north-east outfit.

Tom Halliday scored five tries to help Doncaster comfortably dispatch West Wales Raiders 70-6 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Menzie Yere, Levy Nzoungou, Jordan Howden, Watson Boas (2) and Jason Tali (2) also scored for Richard Horne’s Dons.

The second round draw for the 1895 Cup has since been made.
