Castleford outside-back Mahe Fonua says he is hoping to confirm his future in the next few weeks with the goal of remaining a Tiger.

Fonua, 29, remains off-contract at the end of the current campaign. However, the Mend-A-Hose Jungle side have the option to extend his contract by a further two seasons.

The centre or winger has made 23 appearances in the current season and recently celebrated his 100th Super League appearance. He has crossed for 44 tries across his stints with Hull FC and Castleford.

Mahe Fonua: ‘If I could choose, I’d stay here at Castleford’

“I’d love to stay here,” Fonua said. “I’m enjoying what Cas has going on and I’m enjoying how I’m playing here.

“Me and my family have settled in here. We still stay in Hull, but the drive down to Cas isn’t long at all.

“Ideally, if I could choose, I’d stay here at Castleford.

“The relationship between me and Lee Radford is good. I’m happy to stay. He sort of hinted that if I continue the way I’m going, the club is going to be happy as well.

“I think playing on this one-year contract and not knowing if I’ll be around next year, it has made me enjoy my footy a little bit more. I’m going into every game thinking this could be my last season and touch wood I don’t get injured.

“I’m enjoying my footy at the moment and what’s going on here at Cas. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks before the season finishes, I can lock something in.”

Cheyse Blair, Derrell Olpherts, James Clare, Sosaia Feki, Brad Martin and Lewis Peachey are all off contract at Castleford at the end of the season.
