Widnes can win trophies in next few years, says Matt Whitley

Widnes star Matt Whitley believes the Vikings can collect silverware in the next few years after extending his contract last week.

The 22-year-old signed a new three-year deal with the club last week, a deal which sees him remain at the Select Security Stadium until the end of the 2021 season.

And he admitted that one of the main reasons why he decided to stay at Widnes is the opportunity to pick up some silverware.

He told widnesvikings.co.uk: “I want to win trophies and I believe we can do that here in the next few years.

“We’ve got some good lads coming through the system, so it will be good to keep playing with them and fulfilling our potential.”

Whitley scored a try to help the Vikings record the club’s biggest ever victory last Saturday as they thrashed League 1 side Coventry Bears 90-0 to progress through to the sixth round of the Challenge Cup.

And he was very pleased with their clinical display.

The England Knights representative said: “That was a professional performance from us.

“We stuck to our game plan and came out with a really good result.

“We managed to carry out the practise we’d done in training, and to also try out some moves that you don’t really get the chance to do in tight league games.”

Widnes welcome Wigan Warriors to the Select Security Stadium on Friday, 8pm kick-off.
