Super 8s & Qualifiers round-up: Barba inspires Saints, Widnes relegation confirmed, Championship stuns Super League

There were a few surprising results on the weekend.

Wigan Warriors secured a home semi-final thanks to a scrappy 13-6 win over Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium. Morgan Escare was brilliant for Wigan, he scored a try and kicked a drop-goal in a man of the match performance.

Castleford Tigers booked a semi-final trip to Wigan Warriors as they convincingly beat local rivals Wakefield Trinity 42-10 at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle. Greg Eden scored four tries for Castleford, while Greg Minikin, Grant Millington and Junior Moors also scored.

Ben Barba produced a man of the match display to help St Helens win 34-14 against Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Barba bagged a brace for Saints, while Danny Richardson also scored and kicked five goals.

A try from Kenny Edwards in the 77thminute snatched a 26-20 victory for Catalans Dragons against Hull FC at the KCOM Stadium. The Black and Whites have now lost 10 consecutive games, while the Dragons then paraded the Challenge Cup trophy at the Nou Camp on Sunday during Barcelona’s derby against Girona.

In The Qualifiers, A fine kicking game from Jarrod Sammut helped London Broncos shock Salford Red Devils 11-8 at Trailfinders Sports Ground to keep their promotion hopes alive. The Red Devils produced a fightback late on but the Broncos did just enough to hang on.

Widnes Vikings’ seven-year stay in Super League came to an end as they were defeated 20-12 by promotion hopefuls Toronto Wolfpack at the Lamport Stadium in Canada. The Vikings picked up the wooden spoon following the regular Super League season after finishing bottom for the second year running. They have suffered relegation from the top-flight and will be a Championship team in 2019.

Toulouse Olympique stunned Hull Kingston Rovers with a shock 34-23 comeback victory in France to keep their dreams of promotion alive. They came from being 19-0 down to win thanks to tries from Chris Centrone (2), Rhys Curran, Stan Robin, Gavin Marguerite and Bastien Ader.

Leeds Rhinos all bust secured their Super League status for 2019 with a comprehensive 34-6 victory against neighbours Halifax.  Brad Dwyer scored two tries for Leeds, while Liam Sutcliffe scored a try and kicked five goals.
