Cassidy hoping Widnes avoid wooden spoon

Widnes assistant coach Mick Cassidy says the Vikings are determined to avoid the Super League wooden spoon.

Saturday's 42-16 win over Hull moved Widnes level on points with London and Castleford with two games remaining, although the Vikings sit bottom courtesy of their inferior points difference.

They experienced a tough first half of the season on their return to Super League, but three wins in six games in June and July lifted them off the basement until London's recent resurgence.

Cassidy told the club's official website: "Nobody wants to finish bottom in any competition they play in, and in a strange way I think it's good that we still have three teams who could effectively finish bottom, which means there is still a healthy contest there, just as there is at the top of the table.

"Aside of ourselves, London Broncos have found some form and come good in recent weeks under the leadership of Tony Rea, while Castleford Tigers seem to be sliding a bit, so all three clubs have plenty to play for.

"Our destiny is now in our own hands and if we continue to perform like we did last weekend, there's no reason whatsoever why we can't come away with another two wins."

Widnes face a trip to Wakefield and a home game against Warrington in their final two games, as they look to add to the six wins they have picked up so far this season.
