Richard Agar insists Wakefield are in mix for the eight

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach Richard Agar admitted he never believed his side could make the play offs until now.

Agar made the revelation after this side’s 33-32 win over St Helens on Sunday afternoon.

Now the Wildcats coach wants his side to overcome an in-form Hull KR side and propel his side into the play offs for the first time since 2009.

He said: “That’s probably the first time I’ve openly admitted it and really believed it.  We’re in the mix for sure.

“I don’t study the table or other teams fixtures but I do know that where we are on points now then if we can get a result at Hull KR next week then momentum is with us an we’ve put ourselves in a real shout of it.

“If we can get a performance at Hull KR then it would throw the cat amongst the pigeons for play-off spots.  I want the players to enjoy the moment because beating Saints is a huge achievement, but I want us to regain our focus and not let this momentum slip.”

Agar has stressed to his side that the job of challenging for a play off spot is far from done, and that he wants to use the current for the Wildcats are in to begin an attack for the top eight with three games remaining.

He said: “I think the important think we’ve said to the players in there is not to let our hard work slip.  It took us a while to get going and we were working extremely hard.  It was blatant to see the spirit that exists within the squad and we don’t want that hard work to go to waste.”
