Parliament motion tabled for Peacock

Jamie Peacock was a hot topic in Parliament this week, after a motion was tabled recognising his contribution to English and UK sport following his retirement from international rugby league.

Peacock, 34, announced his decision on Tuesday, meaning the first International Origin test against the Exiles was his final appearance for his country, who has served with pride since 2000.

The Leeds prop represented England 22 times and made 26 appearances for Great Britain, helping to beat Australia three times during his international career.

The Motion was tabled by chairman of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group, Greg Mulholland, who is the MP for Leeds North West. He said: "Jamie’s decision to stand down from international rugby league could not have been an easy one, particularly with a World Cup next year and the chance to take on the world’s best footballers.  We in the Parliamentary Rugby League Group pay tribute to Jamie’s talents and passion of the game.  

"As his MBE shows, he has been an outstanding advocate for the sport, both on and off the pitch and his retirement represents a loss to the national squad.  Personally, as a Leeds Rhinos fan, his decision to focus on his domestic career is welcomed, and I hope he can add to his amazing list of medals on that front."

England coach Steve McNamara, who this week named his squad for the second test against the Exiles next Wednesday, says he is in no rush to appoint Peacock's successor.

The Rugby League World Cup takes place in England, Wales, Ireland and France in October and November 2013.
