Paul Cullen leaves Widnes

Widnes have parted company with Director of Rugby and former head coach Paul Cullen.

Cullen, a former player and coach of the Vikings' local rivals Warrington, first moved to the Stobart Stadium in 2009, succeeding Steve McCormack as Head Coach.

In his first season in charge, he led Widnes to the 2009 Northern Rail Cup title, which enabled them to tick the on-field box as part of the Super League licence application.

He once again led Widnes to the Northern Rail Cup final in 2010, where they were beaten by Batley, before moving upstairs to his Director of Rugby role at the end of the season.

Cullen said: "I have enjoyed my time at Widnes and the time is now right for me to move on. I hope I have played my part in a revolution and it is now time for the Vikings to evolve.

"I believe that my objectives have been met which were to win a trophy, win a licence, change from part time to full time professionalism and to deliver Super League to the supporters of the Widnes Vikings after 6 years in the Championship.

"There are exciting times and significant challenges ahead for Widnes and I wish all at the Vikings good luck for their future."

Widnes, who finished bottom of Super League in their first season back in the competition, have recently appointed a new chief executive in James Rule, their third in five years.

Club Chairman Steve O'Connor said: "On behalf of the Board, Staff, Coaches, players and fans I wish to thank Paul for all his efforts at the club.

"He has made a significant contribution to the development of our club as we made the transition into a full time Super League organisation. We wish him the best of luck in his future career."
